Dr. Jill’s Commentary
Many people know about melatonin for sleep, but it does much more than help you fall asleep. In fact, it does a whole lot more. For mold, it’s one of the most powerful brain antioxidants. Mold mycotoxins are fat-soluble, meaning they absorb and accumulate in the fattier tissues in our body. The brain is one of those locations. The effect of mycotoxins on the brain are “brain fog”, slowed thinking, and running out of brain fuel. This is lovingly called “mold brain.”
As I write about in my book, melatonin is one of the key REPAIR tools for the brain, and also for the liver and kidneys. In the liver, melatonin repairs liver cells that have been injured so badly, they otherwise would die off. It also stimulates the liver to make its own glutathione, so if someone doesn’t tolerate glutathione, we can start with melatonin and selenium, a trace mineral needed to make glutathione.
Melatonin is also considered a “pro-kinetic”, meaning it stimulates peristalsis. Mycotoxins put the “stall” in peristalsis. Melatonin to the rescue! Melatonin gently combats this effect by supporting normal movement of the digestion throughout the whole tube.
Melatonin is best taken just after dinnertime, a few hours before your desired bedtime. Too much can cause morning grogginess. Even though we typically dose much higher than 1-4mg for mold repair, the liposomal form seems to boost absorption so we can dose less.
From The Book
Here are some key points from my book, Break The Mold, so you can see how this REPAIR tool fits into a mold recovery plan.
This picture best describes the steps to recover your health after a toxic mold exposure.
The first solution is to AVOID mold!
AVOIDANCE means getting away from the mold.
FUNDAMENTALS involve specific foods and lifestyle factors that can greatly improve your ability to conquer mold.
PROTECT and REPAIR is accomplished with targeted nutrients to manage the toxic damage from mycotoxin exposure.
FIGHT means conquering fungal overgrowth in your body.
