Dr. Jill’s Commentary
Mold is hard on the gut. Mold mycotoxins cause inflammation, gut barrier breakdown, microbial imbalances, impaired immunity, and lack of motility. What a mess! This can lead to conditions like leaky gut syndrome, dysbiosis, SIBO, and ulcerative colitis. Like I said, mold is hard on the gut.
Because of these known effects, many mold-sick people are counseled to take probiotics. Sound advice! As I write in the FUNDAMENTALS section of my book, Break The Mold, probiotics can be used to reestablish a healthy microbiome. I call probiotics “enforced gentrification,” supplementing a select group of characters to inhabit your gut to create order out of a chaotic, inflamed, disordered gut.
Except, some mold-sick people don’t tolerate regular probiotics. Regular probiotics, those made with Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria, seek to replete or replace the species found in the gut. If you have dysbiosis, also known as an imbalance of the microbes in your gut, taking these can lead to gas, bloating, constipation and gut pain. Not good!
The magic of 100% spore-based probiotics is that they seek to recondition the gut flora, not replace. They support a person’s natural, innate gut flora, without trying to guess which species need to be replaced and which ones are already overgrown. This allows your natural species to thrive.
What I also like about spore-based probiotics is that after balance is achieved, they don’t need to be taken every day. They can be used “as needed” when your digestion isn’t working optimally. And, they don’t need refrigeration. My patients like that for traveling, and for the ease of adding to a pill organizer.
From The Book
Here are some key points from my book, Break The Mold, so you can see how this FUNDAMENTAL tool fits into a mold recovery plan.
This picture best describes the steps to recover your health after a toxic mold exposure.
The first solution is to AVOID mold!
AVOIDANCE means getting away from the mold.
FUNDAMENTALS involve specific foods and lifestyle factors that can greatly improve your ability to conquer mold.
PROTECT and REPAIR is accomplished with targeted nutrients to manage the toxic damage from mycotoxin exposure.
FIGHT means conquering fungal overgrowth in your body.
