Dr. Jill’s Commentary
As I write about in my book, Break The Mold, the last step to “peel the orange” is to fight mold. This involves using tools that have antifungal properties to tamp down the fungal overgrowth and colonization that happens after exposure to a water-damaged building. I describe it as “you become the moldy building.” When this happens, you need backup. And garlic is a perfect agent.
Don’t mistake its power. We’ve become so familiar with garlic as a flavorant to cooking, that we’ve started to underestimate its strength. It’s actually wiser than pharmaceuticals. Candida, a normal yeast in the body that can overgrow, has found many ways to work around the common drugs used to fight it. This is called drug resistance. But Candida can’t figure out garlic. Garlic has been shown in scientific studies to have activity against strains that are resistant to common antifungal drugs.** What’s more, I use it safely in combination with pharmaceutical antifungals to help reduce resistance and boost the antifungal activity of the medication.
I call this blend FOD-friendly garlic. Garlic as a whole food contains fructans, which those on a FODMAP diet can’t handle. The wonderful thing about this formulation is that we’ve focused on the antifungal aspect allicillin, one of the most studied and active extracts of garlic. My patients on a FODMAP diet tolerate it quite well.

The first solution is to AVOID mold!
AVOIDANCE means getting away from the mold.
FUNDAMENTALS involve specific foods and lifestyle factors that can greatly improve your ability to conquer mold.
PROTECT and REPAIR is accomplished with targeted nutrients to manage the toxic damage from mycotoxin exposure.
