Dr. Jill’s Commentary
Even though I often refer to them together as a group, all mold mycotoxins are unique. While they have many things in common, each mycotoxin is different in molecular structure and how it affects the body.
If I were to give Zearalenone a theme word it would be “estrogenic+.” The estrogenic part of the name is pretty easy to figure out. Zearalenone mimics estrogen in the body. I add the ‘+’ to the theme word, because we can’t stop at hormones. This mycotoxin is treacherous to the function of the heart, immune system, and kidneys. If we only focus on the hormone piece, we could be leaving those systems without support.
Here’s why these are my top 4 supplements for Zearalenone.
Complete detoxification of Zearalenone is complex, and modified by multiple organ pathways. Other than the liver pathway, which is supported by DIM and I3C listed below, we need a host of kidney and immune protection and support, such as found in this blend of nutrients and herbs, specifically selected for mycotoxin exposure.*
Research continues to point to melatonin as being an important antioxidant for the kidneys when it comes to mycotoxin exposure. Similar to Ochratoxin, Zearalenone also harms the kidneys. I’ve found improved protective effects using a lipsomal form of melatonin. Improved absorption from the liposomal form allows for lower doses to reach the same benefit.*
Hawthorn Solid Extract
Zearalenone affects the neurology and function of the heart in the very same ways that Hawthorn has been shown to support the heart and its function. Not only does Hawthorn have these heart protecting effects, the bioflavonoids help to bump Zearalenone off a blood protein so the kidneys can more easily clear it. This solid extract concentrate is a favorite with my patients.*
DIM + I3C
Zearalenone is an estrogenic mycotoxin. Supporting estrogen metabolism pathways helps to detoxify this estrogenic mycotoxin. In studies, DIM and I3C promote healthy oxidative stress responses associated with xenoestrogen exposure from the environment.
