Gut-derived peptide that acts on the gut-brain axis.*
What Dr. Jill calls the “happy gut” text message to the brain.
Dr. Jill’s Commentary
From my book, A Light in the Dark for PANDAS & PANS:
“BPC-157, or Body Protection Compound, is formed in the stomach to maintain the gut barrier and protect us from infections that aren’t burned up by our stomach acid.
I think of BPC-157 as a “happy gut” signal to the brain. Remember, if the gut ain’t happy, the brain ain’t happy. These peptides are released from the gut microbiome to communicate messages to the brain via the gut-brain axis. They act fairly quickly, like a text.
A happy gut sends a happy emoji peptide to the brain, and the brain follows suit by feeling calm and happy. A sad gut sends a sad emoji peptide to the brain, and the brain follows suit by feeling depressed or anxious.
We use this peptide to keep the good vibes going, and keep the digestion free of pathogens. BPC-157 can also reduce tics. BPC-157 also has anti-inflammatory effects, and heals wounds and tendon injuries.
Because of its stomach-protecting properties, I add this peptide whenever a child needs to take Ibuprofen.”
BPC-157 dissolves easily in water, so it can be used in children who don’t swallow pills.
