Understanding Mold Detox: Accumulation vs. Detoxification

Feeling “off” and wondering if mold might be behind it? You’re not alone. Hi, I’m Dr. Jill Crista, naturopathic doctor, mold expert, and author of Break the Mold, and I’ve seen this story play out more times than I can count: chronic symptoms, mystery diagnoses, and no clear path forward. That is, until we talk about mold.
In this blog, I’ll help you understand how mold impacts your body’s ability to detox, and how to tell whether you’re accumulating toxins or clearing them. Most importantly, I’ll share practical steps to shift your body back into healing mode. Let’s get you unstuck.
Accumulation vs. Detoxification: Where’s Your Body At?
Here’s the core idea: your body is always in one of two modes: Accumulation or Detoxification. It can’t be in both at once.
- Accumulation Mode: This is the mode where toxins build up faster than your body can eliminate them. Mold exposure pushes your needle in this direction into a state I call “dis-ease.” It’s where systems get overwhelmed and symptoms pile up.
- Detoxification Mode: This is the mode where your body gets a chance to flush out accumulated toxins because the daily load got lighter. While this sounds like the better mode, this can lead to detox symptoms.
- Your Body’s True North: Your body’s desired state, or “true north”, is to be balanced right in the middle. It’s the natural state where your system efficiently clears toxins and restores balance, keeping up with the daily load with ease and without creating symptoms.
- Mold’s Impact: But mold exposure makes that balance harder to achieve.
That’s why recognizing which mode you’re in is key to reclaiming your health.
Signs You’re in Accumulation Mode
From my clinical experience and personal journey, here are the red flags I watch for – signs your needle is stuck on “accumulate”:
- Constipation: If you can’t poop, toxins aren’t leaving your body.
- Insomnia: If you can’t sleep, your body struggles to detox.
- Chronic Dehydration: You can’t clear toxins without water.
- Anxiety: Mold toxins often amplify mental unrest.
- Chemical Sensitivity: You can’t go into the grocery store laundry detergent aisle or tolerate fumes, candles, or exhaust.
- Serious Risks: A cancer diagnosis, unfortunately, can be a sign of long-term toxic accumulation.
If these symptoms sound familiar, your body may be stuck in accumulation mode and mold may be the trigger.
How to Shift to Detoxification Mode
Here’s the good news: you can shift the needle. But you have to stop incoming toxins and support your body’s natural clearing systems. Here’s how:
- Avoid Moldy Spaces: Get well out of that moldy building to stop accumulation.
- Keep Hydrated: Water is essential for every detox pathway. Sip consistently throughout the day.
- Support Detox Pathways: Nutrients matter. Your body needs vitamins, minerals, and fiber to bind and eliminate mold toxins.
- Test for Toxins: Don’t be discouraged if your urine mycotoxin test comes back negative while you’re still exposed. Some people only show results after they’re out of the moldy environment. Learn more about this in Break the Mold.
