What are PANDAS and PANS?

PANDAS and PANS are pediatric conditions affecting an area in the brain called the basal ganglia. It results in brain inflammation, which can lead to near sudden behavioral and mood changes.

Research is suggesting that they occur from exposure to infectious and environmental triggers.

PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus. It’s a subset of PANS, which stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome.

PANDAS is associated with Strep, whereas PANS may be from other causes, including environmental. However, once triggered, PANS may also be aggravated by a Strep infection or exposure.

A Paradigm Change in Mental Health

PANDAS and PANS exemplify how a body problem can cause changes to the brain and its function. Medicine is still catching up to that reality. In the meantime, children are falling through the cracks and not getting appropriate treatment.

Help these kids who are falling through the cracks.
