We all deserve optimal, vibrant health. A few of your answers caught my attention. They point to potential nutrient deficiencies, lifestyle factors, or environmental toxin exposures that may be affecting how you feel.

Here are some things for you to consider to reach optimal health.

What are you cleaning your home with?

Did you know that many household cleaning products contain ingredients that are considered toxic with repeated use? This puts a strain on your body and can cause issues with skin, digestion, vision, weight, fatigue and the clarity of your mind.

Here’s a natural alternative you can make yourself. I’m a naturopathic doctor and expert in treating mold-related illness. I created this formula for the mold-sick people I work with, but since it’s non-toxic and antimicrobial, it can be used by anyone as an all-purpose cleaner.

Do you protect your sleep?

Somehow in our culture, sleep got a bad rap – as if needing sleep is a weakness. Sleep is actually one of the most powerful things you can do to make a positive impact on your health. And we now understand that it’s not just the amount of sleep, but the quality. Oddly, sleep quality is determined more by what you do during the day than night.

Here are a few tips:
-Early morning sunlight for 15 minutes (when your eyes see the early morning sun, a necessary sleep chemical gets turned on in your brain.)
-Move your body early in the day (one of the factors of a healthy circadian rhythm is movement.)
-Get natural daylight throughout the day (it doesn’t take much, but small frequent doses of daylight help reinforce awake-time so your body understands that it’s sleep-time when it’s dark.)

Melatonin is the hormone that makes us sleepy, but it’s much more than a sleep hormone. Melatonin is a brain-specific antioxidant. Lack of melatonin not only affects our ability to sleep, it also causes brain fog, lack of focus, and overall brain fatigue. Melatonin is determined by our bedtime routine. Are you eating the best foods for your body?


The colorful pigments in vegetables and fruits are called bioflavonoids. Each color band assists your body in its own special way. To maximize health, eat every color band of the rainbow every day – aiming for 5-7 servings of vegetables and only one serving of fruit daily.

One particularly helpful color band for brain function and to combat fatigue is deep blue-purple, and is called resveratrol. This is found in foods such as cranberries, blueberries, red grapes, plums, beet roots, red cabbage, eggplant, purple potatoes, and dark chocolate.


Dark leafy greens are the most needed and the most commonly lacking color of the rainbow. This color band is referred to as folic acid, named after foliage – aka leafy greens. Folic acid drives our energy quotient. If we don’t have enough, we feel it as low energy, slow thinking, weak vision, and sluggish digestion.

So if it’s green and edible, it’s probably good for you. Most bodies are happiest getting 3-4 servings of dark leafy greens daily.

Vitamin D plays a critical role in immune function. We get it from sun exposure, and it’s one of the biggest immune boosts known. Unfortunately, most of us don’t get enough “Vitamin Sunshine” to keep our immune systems running at full speed. Even if you lived on the Equator and worked outside, you still may not get enough Vitamin D. Your Vitamin D levels can be tested with your doctor to ensure adequate stores.


A healthy gut means healthy gut bacteria are in residence. The healthier the strains in your gut, the stronger your immune system. Healthy gut bacteria, or probiotics, are found in naturally fermented foods, such as yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi. For people really struggling with immune issues, allergies, or weight gain, I often recommend probiotics as a supplement.

One of my personal favorite ways to protect my respiratory passages, reducing allergies and infection, is with essential oils. As an expert in mold-related illness, I’ve found essential oil sprays work well and smell fantastic.
