Dr. Jill’s Commentary
Is your vitamin D low despite supplementing? Pretty common with mold. Mold reduces vitamin D absorption thus lowering your 25-OH vitamin D level. It does this by a few ways.

First, by down-regulating the number of receptors available to absorb vitamin D. This means that the longer you’re exposed to mycotoxins, the less doorways you have for vitamin D.

Mold chemicals and toxins also gum up your bile, which is the fluid in the body that helps us absorb our fat-soluble nutrients. This is also true for other necessary fat-soluble vitamins, like K, A, and E – and many of my patients are low in these as well.

Why would mold block D? Because it’s wiley. Vitamin D plays an important role in our immune system fight against fungus. When our vitamin D status is normal, we can better resist mold colonization. But when it’s low, mold can move in.

Vitamin D should really be called “hormone D”, as it works as a messenger between our various hormone systems, keeping each system informed what the other is doing. One of the most common hormone effects from low vitamin D that I see in my practice is hypothyroidism. When the thyroid tests low, we rule out low vitamin D as a contributor.

Vitamin K is important to supplement whenever supplementing vitamin D. Vitamin D encourages calcium absorption, while vitamin K makes sure that calcium gets to the right tissues – the teeth and bones – and not deposit in the wrong places. This is especially important for those with high oxalates after mold exposure.

These critical vitamins are formulated in a liposomal form to assist absorption. Since mold blocks the receptors, we have to find a more absorbable way to get it in.

From The Book
Here are some key points from my book, Break The Mold, so you can see how these PROTECT tools fit in.
This picture best describes the steps to recover your health after a toxic mold exposure.

The first solution is to AVOID mold!

AVOIDANCE means getting away from the mold.

FUNDAMENTALS involve specific foods and lifestyle factors that can greatly improve your ability to conquer mold.

PROTECT and REPAIR is accomplished with targeted nutrients to manage the toxic damage from mycotoxin exposure.

FIGHT means conquering fungal overgrowth in your body.
